Queen of Hearts: Off With Their Heads! : The Journey from Inspiration to Creation
Creating a fine art photography piece such as "Off With Their Heads!" was a meticulous and creative process that involved a blend of inspiration, planning and execution. This particular piece was a captivating endeavour that drew from various elements to bring forth a vision that resonated with depth and emotion.
Inspiration: The inception of this piece stemmed from Valentine’s Day and a desire to explore themes of strength and vulnerability as well as making a grand statement.
Conceptualization: The initial phase involved meticulous conceptualization, where we brainstormed the vision for this piece. The aim was to infuse the photograph with a sense of timeless elegance and strength, while incorporating visual elements that would evoke emotion and intrigue.
Pre-production: The pre-production phase was crucial, involving the selection of the model, wardrobe, props, and location.
I will go into more details below. (The Design Process, The Photoshoot, The Results)
Execution: On the day of the shoot, meticulous attention was paid to lighting, composition, and directing the model to convey the intended emotion. We worked collaboratively to capture the essence of the "Queen of Hearts: Off With Their Heads!" ensuring that every frame encapsulated the desired depth and regality.
Post-production: Post-shoot, the process of refining each photograph began. From selecting the perfect images to enhancing colour tones and textures, every detail was meticulously polished to bring our vision to life.
The Design Process:
Crafting the Faux Porcelain Corset and Heart Wig
Creating the faux porcelain corset and wig involved a meticulous and artistic process that combined traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Each step required precision and expertise to achieve the desired result.
Design Phase
1. Conceptualization: We wanted to create a Valentines dat piece. The process began with conceptualizing the corset’s design, taking into account factors such as shape, pattern, and functionality.
Material Selection
1. Choosing The Materials: We wanted the High-quality porcelain look, known for its strength and beauty. We ended up selecting worbla as the material used, for its suitability to form the corset’s structure. The wig was created using pantyhose stuffed with cotton and overlayed with a red wig. Lastly, the gown underneath was thrifted from a local thrift store.
2. Supporting Elements: Additional materials like fabric, felt, stencils, and clay components were chosen to complement and reinforce the faux porcelain and wig structures.
Construction
1. Creating the Mold: A mold of a mannequin’s body was created by heating the worbla over it. This involved meticulous measurements and casting techniques to capture the exact contours.
2. Worbla Shaping: The worbla was carefully shaped to conform to the mold. The trick was to manipulate the worbla without compromising its integrity.
3. Re-enforcing Process: The shaped worbla was re-enforced with thick foam to achieve the desired strength and texture. We wanted to be able to run a ribbon through the back.
Assembly and Finishing
1. Assembling the Corset: The worbla and clay were assembled, ensuring a good fit and comfort for the wearer.
2. Refinement and Detailing: The corset underwent meticulous refinement, including stencilling, painting, and intricate clay detailing to enhance its visual appeal.
The process of creating this look demanded a fusion of artistry, precision engineering, and an understanding of the materials, resulting in a wearable masterpiece that seamlessly combines beauty and functionality.

Off with their heads! The Queen’s story:
“The Queen of Hearts stood tall in her opulent throne room, her crimson gown billowing around her like a sea of blood.
Her piercing gaze bore into the trembling crowd before her. The stewards, with fear etched on their faces, knew all too well the implications of crossing the queen's path.
Off with their heads was not just a phrase; it was a dark promise that had echoed through the kingdom for years.
She was known far and wide for her ruthless pursuit of perfection and order. Any deviation from her decrees was met with swift and severe punishment.
A flick of her wrist would send her executioner, a towering figure clad in black, into action. The people learned to live in constant fear of invoking her wrath.
But behind her steely resolve and commanding presence, there was a glimmer of vulnerability. The Queen of Hearts had once been a young princess, full of dreams and aspirations.
As fate would have it, the burdens of the crown transformed her into a stern and unyielding ruler. Her subjects forgot that beneath the facade of relentless authority, beat the heart of a woman who yearned for understanding and compassion.”
Completing this project was a moment of immense pride and gratitude.
As the shutter clicked for the final time and the last image was selected, a wave of emotions flooded my heart and mind.
The pride that stems from the culmination of creative vision, technical skill, teamwork and dedicated effort poured into every frame captured.
The gratitude that accompanies the completion of this project is profound.
It is a reflection of the appreciation for Katie, the subject that lent herself to the lens. Suzanne and Alissa, the collaborators who contributed their talents, and the viewers who will experience the visual storytelling.
In conclusion, this photoshoot surpassed all expectations, yielding a collection of images that not only meets but exceeds the standards of artistic excellence. The resulting photographs are a testament to the collective talent and creative synergy of all involved, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
